Ambient/Downtempo
This is a collective term for any and all electronic dance music that is a lot lower energy than most of the other more dancefloor driven scenes. Here the appeal is in the music itself rather than an experience the music can bring via festivals or clubs. Most of this scene is 'headphone music', it isn't designed to be listened to at a festival or club setting, but rather designed for you to relax, meditate or vibe to. Some genres in this scene can technically fall under others as well, e.g. Chillstep ticks all the boxes to be part of this scene but can technically fall under Bass Music due to it's origins and influences from Dubstep.
Ambient Music
This is an example of Classical Ambient. The instrumentation generally consists of a piano as well as synth-pads that create a soundscape that evolves over the song. The vibe is quite uplifting.
This is an example of Dark Ambient. The concept is the same with few instruments evolving over time, but here a much darker and uneasy atmosphere is created, one that can make you scared and alone.
This is an example of Space Ambient. As the name suggests it sounds like you're in outer space. The mood is very ethereal and very slow to evolve. At times this genre can be difficult to differentiate from the likes of Drone Music due to a similar aesthetic. Space Ambient is brighter and more uplifting than Drone.
Ambient is a genre of music like no other. Rather than trying to captivate the listener with vocals, drops or catchy hooks it gives the listener an experience like no other, one that only time can give you; no drops, no vocals just a soundscape that evolves throughout the duration of the song. The term ambient music was coined by the British producer Brian Eno in the late 1970s and the scene has developed as a direct consequence of the contributions. There are many sub-genres of ambient, like classical ambient, dark ambient, space ambient, etc. The main thing differentiating each genres is the sound design, sound selection and overall sonic aesthetic each provide. It is key to note that ambient tends to lack any form of rhythmic and percussive elements.
