Bass Music
The Bass Music scene is the one which is mainly composed of genres unrelated to the emergence of Chicago House in the mid-to-late 1980s. These genres do not have four-to-the-floor kick drums. They have a broken or half-time drum pattern, which is a large determining factor when classifying electronic dance music. Here each major sub-genre, as well as smaller and emergent sub-genres are listed and explained.
Dubstep
UK Dubstep
This is the original Dubstep genre. It originated from South London in the early 2000s. It developed from an offshoot of UK Garage that took influence from how Dub producers from Jamaica processed their vocals together with the drum patterns popular in 2-Step, hence the name Dubstep. Relevant artists that give a good idea what UK Dubstep sounds like are: Skream, Benga, Mala, etc. UK Dubstep would latter evolve into what became known Brostep due to American producers influencing the original Dubstep sound.
Brostep
As previously mentioned, Brostep was originally an interpretation of the original Dubstep sound with a more bombastic and in-your-face sound selection. Artists like Rusko and Skrillex helped to define the early era of Brostep with producers like Excision and Zomboy also being notable within that time period. Brostep has evolved from it's original sound, no thanks to progress made in better and more advanced production techniques and equipment. Contrary to popular belief Brostep is not a dead genre, and never has been. Rather, it has fallen out of the mainstream appeal that it once had, making a more underground genre than it ever has been.
